Rotary has a major interest in Peace. It has partnered with University of Queensland to foster Peace and reconciliation through the Rotary Peace Centre and the graduates of that centre. Hence we attended the Brisbane International Day of Peace Lecture 2019 delivered by Sophie McNeill awarding winning reporter and presenter on ABC four Corners. Sophie spoke of the break down of the rule of law in various countries ranging from Afganistan, Israel, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, Yememn, Egypt, Turkey, and Gaza and the attrocities that have occurred to the civilian populations of those countries. A tragic tale of seiges starving the populous into submission, bombings of civilians and the rest of the World turning a blind eye. Sophie urged that we open our eyes to all human rights abuses and act to restore peace.
The message from the UN Secretary-General was delivered by Leanne Smith UNAA Goodwill ambassador. Dr Marianne Hanson and PDG Doug St Clair presented awards to Debbie Kilroy from Sisters Inside and Sabafrom the Eritrean Restaurant at West End.
