Rotary in Action – End Polio Now

Once the scourage of humanity Polio has been attacked by Rotary in conjunction with the United Nations and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to End Polio Now.

Polio has been eradicated in nearly every country of the World through a simple oral vaccine, developed by Jonas Salk in 1955. Another oral polio vaccine was developed by Albert Sabin and came into commercial use in 1961. In 1988 Rotary International took on the fight to eradicate Polio and is very nearly there.

To raise awareness on World Polio Day, the combined Rotary Clubs of Brisbane have marched across the Victoria Bridge whilst the Bridge was lit up in a purple hue. Why purple? It is the colour of the paint applied to a finger of the child receiving the vaccine to show they have been immunised.

Money is still needed to complete the immunisation in some of the more remote areas of the World and Rotary is still in need of funds finish off Polio. If you wish to donate you can do so through our club. Below are some photos of the march.
