Our Club has been a continuous supporter, promoter and sponsor for this programme. The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a not-for-profit organisation that runs a number of residential programmes to encourage young people in their passion for science technology engineering and maths but science particularly.
This year we have successfully sponsored two students from Canon Hill Anglican College but with the wildfires in and around Canberra the NYSF was forced to prematurely end Session A, evacuate the students under emergency timelines, and completely cancel session C of the NYSF Year 12 Program 2020 due to the smoke impact from the Australian bushfires near the ACT resulting in the closure of ANU Facilities and accommodation. NYSF is currently looking at assisting the students who missed out.
Session B (southern students) complete their programme at the University of Queensland so they were fortunate enough to enjoy the NYSF experience. I was invited by our District Governor Ros Kelly to attend the Science Dinner at Brisbane City Hall where I was able to meet and mingle with some of the students attending UQ for the programme. The keynote speaker Professor Tanya Monro an NYSF Alumnii and now Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist urged student to keep asking the question “why is it so?”
NYSF was an idea of a rotarian and now has large corporate support. Mr Rowley Tompsett closed the dinner thanking its numerous corpoate sponsor and Rotary which continues involvement in the programme.
